Before There Can Be Creativity

Before There Can Be Creativity

Transitioning to writing full time has been a challenge. Practicing law every day for almost 12 years and then stopping to write was a wake up call. Learning to live a creative life is fun, adventurous and never boring. But I had to create a schedule to maximize productivity but encouraging creativity. But before there can be creativity or productivity, there must always be coffee.

Whether it is meeting with my creative team or spending a day of tackling the next book proposal, I have learned that working from home cannot mean staying at home. I tried for several months to do everything from my living couch or dining room table, but it was not to be.

The laundry would call out to me to be folded, the dishes would glare at me from the sink and the delivery people just would not stop ringing the doorbell. Add two dogs to the mix who need to be entertained by either one another or myself and you have a string of wasted days.

The best thing about working from home I have found, is leaving the house on high load work days. The destination may change, but my routine is pretty set.

I wake up with everyone, do breakfast and get ready while they are getting dressed and teeth brushed. There is no need to put on something fancy-sweatpants and a little eye makeup will do the trick.

Once everyone is out the door for school and work, I load up in my car with my camera and laptop and set off for the day’s adventures. But my commute for the day is not the same without a stop at my McDonald’s around the corner for a McCafé coffee or espresso drink.

And then, let the open road and adventures begin. Oklahoma City has revamped some of its downtown areas in the last few years and with the cooler temps, my McCafé Pumpkin Spice Latte and I have been in the Wheeler District. I prop open my laptop in the mornings and no one is there. It is peaceful and the scenery is some of the best in the city.

Sometimes, I drive down historic Route 66 and take in some of the smaller parts of my State. Mostly, because I love driving with the windows down and letting my mind get creative. It is some of the best times to be in the car!
